Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam - ChairmanSheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam was born in 1922 at Ankoma in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
His Islamic education began with his father who gave him Qur’anic tutorials. He was later transferred to Koforidua to continue his education at the hands of Alhaji Bunyameen.
In 1946, after the Second World War, Ustaz, as he was affectionately called by his long list of students, relocated together with his teacher Alhaji Bunyameen to Accra. In his insatiable quest for knowledge, Ustaz left the shores of Ghana in 1958 for Nigeria. He made a brief sojourn into Sudan and then to Makkah to perform Hajj. Ustaz stayed and enlisted in Daarul Hadith in Madina where he had his junior and senior secondary education. When the now famous Islamic University of Madinah opened its doors for studies, Sheikh Umar became not only one of the pioneers of the school but the first Ghanaian to study there. Sheikh Umar, aka Hajj Umar, returned to Ghana in 1968 after successfully graduating from the faculty of Shariah (Islamic law) and started the Institute of Islamic Studies in the Kardo Mosque at Nima. The school later relocated to the Mosque of Alhaj Mei Allo and then to Abeka before finally settling at its present location off the Nima Highway opposite the National Headquarters of Ahlussunna Wal-Jama’a. He also, together with others founded the Islamic Research and Reformation Centre which is now housed together with the institute in an imposing four storey building. Apart from opening the floodgates to Islamic studies in the Gulf states, he personally taught and trained many of the present-day Muslim scholars in the system.
When in 1997 the need arose for Ahlussunna Wal Jama’a to elect a National Imam, the choice naturally fell on Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam even when he was himself absent from the meeting. Under his able leadership Ahlussunna Wal-jama’a has strongly asserted itself in national development and is today a household name on the Islamic landscape.
